I want all my constituents to know that even though Parliament is prorogued, my Constituency and Ottawa offices are open. Many people have contacted my office regarding the conflict that has erupted in Parliament. The reported reasons for this stalemate have been varied and partisan.

One reason forwarded by the Opposition Parties is that our government has not addressed the domestic economic crisis.  I can assure you that a year ago the Prime Minister and the Minister of Finance were aware of the impending economic challenges and did respond by addressing fiscal and tax policy to cushion Canadians from the looming credit crisis. We are going to see some very trying times, especially in eastern Canada. The opposition want us to inject a thirty billion dollar stimulus package to prop up the economy. No plan has been forwarded by the opposition but one can just imagine how tempted they are to throw money around for political gain.

I am not saying that the Federal Government will not spend in sectors to spark the economy. Our Minister of Finance has said he will go into deficit spending in a way that will not cause a structural deficit. This simply means that one time investments will be made that will not be on going after the recovery. Throwing money at the various sectors of the economy in subsidies will not solve issues now nor in the future.

Our Government has committed in the recent economic statement to double 2009 spending in the area of infrastructure. Build the roads, bridges, water systems, sanitary plants now and the benefits to the economy is instant and the investments will have value in the future as the economy recovers.

Bridge financing might be considered in some sectors of the economy but those dollars extended will need to be repaid. Investments can also be made in green technologies that will save energy or protect the environment that will benefit the economy and our environment in years to come.

The Prime Minister has extended open arms to the opposition for their input to the budget. He has also invited all Provincial and Territorial Premiers to meet with him and share their needs in the budget. As a Conservative caucus we also have been invited by the Finance Minister to send him suggestions for our constituencies.

On January 26, 2009, when the budget is tabled no one will be able to say they did not have an opportunity to contribute to the budget deliberations.

It is my hope that all Parties will be able to co-operate and show leadership and provide solutions during these uncertain economic times.
