MP Colin Mayes jointly Seconds, A ‘Private Members’ Bill on Suicide Prevention
October 17, 2011

Ottawa: Oct.17, 2011 –- MP Colin Mayes will be jointly seconding Kitchener-Conestoga MP Harold Albrecht’s Private Members’ Bill C-300 “An Act respecting a Federal Framework for Suicide Prevention”.

“In Canada far too many lives are lost each year to suicide.  It equates to ten suicides per day!  In my view, even one suicide is far too many. It is the second leading cause of death among Canadian youth ages 10 to 24,” said MP Colin Mayes.

This Bill, if passed would:

  • promote collaboration and knowledge exchange among different jurisdictions,
  • promote the use of research and evidence-based practices in suicide prevention, and
  • define best practices for the prevention of suicide.

“The impacts of suicide are enormous, and the factors that contribute to suicide are complex and far-reaching. We all have a responsibility to provide the services to communities in need,” concluded MP Mayes.
